THS Band Camps 2021 Announced!

Below is the schedule for band camp! Please plan in advance and schedule trips around these very important dates!
If there were ever a year when we needed every single person in attendance more than ever, this would be the one! We have so much ground to cover even compared to a normal year. Camps will take place at Timberline in the band room/on the band field and are day camps. More information will be sent out on specifics when it becomes available.

Thank you in advance for your help in setting aside these required dates for your students to attend:

1. Leadership Camp - ALL selected leaders - Wednesday, July 28 - Time TBA

2. New Member/New Marcher Camp - ALL 10th graders (current students in 9th grade) and anyone new to marching - Thursday-Friday, July 29-30 - All day, times TBA

3. FULL Band Camp - ALL members, ALL sections, ALL grades - Monday-Friday, August 2-6 - All day, times TBA

Band Families,

In the band community, there is an ongoing study regarding the spread of aerosol particles created while playing wind instruments and how to mitigate and reduce that spread. Below are several links to the study if you would like to read the information.

ROUND ONE PRELIMINARY INFORMATION
  • https://www.nfhs.org/media/4029974/preliminary-testing-report-7-13-20.pdf
  • https://www.nfhs.org/articles/unprecedented-international-coalition-led-by-performing-arts-organizations-to-commission-covid-19-study/

ROUND TWO PRELIMINARY INFORMATION
  • https://www.nfhs.org/articles/second-round-of-performing-arts-aerosol-study-produces-encouraging-preliminary-results/
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi4x5HDqWqs

The study gives some simple guidance that effectively reduces the spread of aerosol particles while playing instruments through face masks for the musicians and fabric covers for the instruments. We will be taking advantage of it this year as a best practice in our band classrooms. These instrument covers are able to be bought or made. Attached are guides on how to make the instrument covers or places they can be purchased.

Potential Sources for Purchasing Your Instrument Cover:
Seavine
McCormicks
Crown Store
FJM

These sources are not exhaustive and these products are relatively new to the market.  If you find another source, please contact your school band director and they will help verify the company’s reputation within the band community.
In addition to the covers, all wind students will need to wear masks during class. These masks should be only used in band class for instrument playing and will have a small slit/cut to allow for mouthpiece usage. The BSD will be supplying one instrument mask per player, but students are welcome to provide their own if they would like. Flute masks must have side access, whereas all other wind players will need front access.  Here are some useful visuals to help.

Please note - you should NOT use a stretchy material if at all possible for the fabric part of the cover as this significantly reduces efficacy per the CSU study.  You should use a non-stretchable material and make the cover 2 layers instead of just a single layer.  Make it wider than the bell of the instrument then use elastic in order to create the “stretch” to fit over the bell.

If there are any families interested in making instrument covers for other students, please let your band director know and they will fill you in on what specific instrument covers are needed.  Alternatively, if you are willing to donate money for the purchase of an instrument cover for a student in need, please do so by donating to the Boise Schools Foundation Music Account. They can be reached at 208-854-4065.

Please contact your school band director for any other questions or information.

From the THS Performing Arts Faculty to you All!
